Reality Connect:How XR is changing medicine

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the online talk “Reality Connect: Insights & Best Practices – Rethinking Health: How XR is changing medicine” was all about immersive technologies in healthcare for an hour. From 11:00 to 12:00, Zoom provided exciting insights into how extended reality (XR) is already taking medical training, communication and processes to a new level.

We started with Günter Illert, founder of Healthcare Shapers. He took a critical look at the current healthcare market – keywords: shortage of skilled workers, hesitant digitalization and increasing complexity. His conclusion: this is precisely where innovative solutions such as XR are needed to better impart knowledge, relieve the burden on staff and enable new forms of collaboration.

Katharina Fritzsche, Key Account Manager at rooom, then showed how browser-based XR solutions work in practice. Using the example of Becton Dickinson (BD), an international medical technology company, she presented the use of digital twins and 3D communication – whether in sales, training or as virtual showrooms. The special feature: The applications run directly in the browser, without additional hardware, and can be used flexibly – for example, for clinics or health insurance companies.

Finally, Can Asal, co-founder of Non Nocere, took over with a look at the surgical training of tomorrow. Together with the University Medical Center Göttingen, his team has developed an immersive VR platform that enables students and medical specialists to receive hands-on training – independent of real operating theaters or patients. He made it clear that the path to successful implementation is not a sure-fire success: the technical infrastructure must be right, internal “XR champions” are worth their weight in gold, and data protection must not be neglected either. His learning: it takes time, but the effort is worth it.

The Reality Connect Talk showed once again that XR is not a toy – but a real tool for the future of medicine. When technology meets real needs and experts are at the table, real transformation can result.
